Feedback Wanted

We’ve been internally discussing moving away from the current blog software to WordPress’ new blog-community software.  WordPress is fantastic and, for you current bloggers, we would be able to export all of your entries without any downtime.  That said, you would have to re-add things that exist in your sidebar, links, etc.

The reason we’re considering this is because WP is very easy to run, both as a blogger and an administrator.  I have not posted many entries in here but I have reported to my co-workers that I find it somewhat confusing and awkward to use.  The feedback I received from them was that our administrative efforts should be used on promoting the webiste and our bloggers, not wasting time and effort deleting spam blogs and trying to keep up with new ways of stopping spam comments.

If anyone has any feedback, pro or against moving to WordPress, I would like to hear it, as the last thing we want to do is inturrupt anyone’s blogging.  Thank you.

Some Thoughts About Spam

Hello.  I’m "Steve the Intern" and will be working on your site for the next academic year as part of my internship.  I’m not sure if I’ll post every day but if I have the time I would like to keep everyone as informed as possible with regards to the status of this website. For my inaugural post I will be addressing a topic everyone hates–comment spam.

Why spam in the first place?  Since search engine rankings are at least partly determined by the number of links pointing to your site, spammers go after blogs to stick links in to their site with the hope of the search engine spiders picking up those links.  In more extreme cases spammers will create blogs (I personally deleted about 40 here) for the sole purpose of creating backlinks to their site or sites.

Why can’t search engines determine what is spam?  In short, they can and do-spammers are complelty wasting their time.  Most blogs either strip out the HTML and Javascript or add the rel="nofollow" attribute to the link.  When search engines come across links that are marked as rel="nofollow" they are simply, as the name suggests, not followed.  These types of links provide quite literally no benefit to the spammer.

How else can we combat spam?  Believe it or not, most spam is not done by robots.  People put "captchas" (those hard-to-read graphics with random letters and numbers) to ensure live people are sitting there entering comments.  The sad fact though is that people, largely in Asia, get paid to spam.  When it’s live people who can read the captchas, there’s really no good means of stopping it altogether.  The most effective way we’ve found is simply running a timed script every 30 seconds or so that queries the database for comments that look spammy and a quick review by a live person here will either delete them or allow them to be posted.

More tomorrow!

Updates to Tennerblog: All bloggers please read this

Hello tennerbloggers. My name is Michael and I am the new owner of Tennerblog.com. Our web properties company has obviously just purchased this site and I just quickly wanted to address some of the changes we have made/will be making in the next few weeks.

New Design: The new design, largely already in place, will hopefully attract new bloggers to the site by clearly demonstrating what is available. This design is more “updated” than the standard template and is hopefully more clear visually.

Deletion of Spam Blogs: We have already gone through all the existing blogs and deleted any that were created for the sole purpose of providing backlinks to other sites. If this community is going to grow, then it needs to be as free as possible of blogs that reflect poorly on the community at large.

Spam Comment Moderation: Within the week our comment spam filter will be finished and applied to all existing and future blogs. With this new filter, you will be able to leave your comments on without worrying about being inundated with spam while still being able to receive real comments about your posts. As a back-up, our internet will be reviewing all incoming comments and deleting spammy ones the filter does not catch.

Increased Promotion: We have outlined a path to increase the visibility of not only tennerblog.com but the blogs it houses. Consider this a healthy compliment to whatever promotional methods you are already participating in.

We will happily take any feedback to you have that you think will make the community as a whole better. Thank you and happy blogging.

Blogging for Profit Begins With a Long Term Plan

Many people dream of blogging for profit, and this goal
is not far beyond the reach of someone with average
intelligence, a willingness to work hard, and a basic
grasp of blogging technology. However, very few
people manage to reap the profits they want from their
blog. Most people who attempt to make money with
their blogs do not succeed for two reasons. Often,
bloggers have unrealistic expectations of how fast their
readership will grow and how much money they will
make, and when these expectations are not met the
disappointment can crush the desire to continue
blogging. The other trap that many bloggers fall into
has to do with lack of planning. If you want to turn a
profit as a blogger, the key to success is to make a
realistic plan and stick with it.

To succeed at blogging for profit, the main thing that
you will need is a large readership. The higher your
traffic, the more advertisers will agree to pay you.
However, cultivating the regular visitors that you will
need in order to make a profit isnt easy. As more and
more blogs appear each day, having a great idea or a
wonderful writing style is no longer enough to get
attention. You need to be able to market your blog
effectively.

Too many bloggers spend all of their time writing posts
and almost no time marketing their project. To be
certain, updating as often as you can is a great way to
keep your blog high on blogrolls and high in blog
search engines like technorati, and once your readers
know that you update frequently they will return to your
site on a regular basis. However, it does not matter how
often you update if nobody is reading your page, so dont
skimp on the time that you spend drawing visitors to
your site. To make your dreams of blogging for profit a
reality, try decreasing your number of posts and using
some of that time to draw new visitors by setting up
link exchanges with other bloggers, making contacts in
the blog community, and following other established
modes of winning traffic.

Of course, even if you are a marketing genius or have a
really great idea for a blog, success is not going to
happen overnight. Building the kind of readership that
blogging for profit requires takes time, and in all
likelihood it will be at least several months before you
are able to turn much of a profit. Try to stay committed
to your blogging project during this initial rough period.
To stay motivated, set goals for how often you will
update and how many readers you want to attract, and
then reward yourself for sticking with your plan.
